Headless Horseman kneeling at grave of Washington Irving

Sleep

HOTELS  |  INNS AND BED & BREAKFASTS  |  MOTELS AND BUDGET  |  CAMPING

Wake up in the landscape that Washington Irving made famous. Base yourself in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow and you're within a few minutes of the Headless Horseman Bridge, the Old Dutch Church, and the winding trails of Rockefeller State Park Preserve — with the Hudson River glinting at the bottom of every hill and Manhattan just 25 miles down the Metro-North line. It's an easy place to arrive by train, leave the car behind, and let a long weekend unspool: cemetery lantern tours after dark, jazz on the waterfront at dusk, apple picking and farmers markets by day, and a Gilded Age mansion or two in between.

The villages sit at the heart of what locals call Sleepy Hollow Country, so wherever you sleep, you're never far from a Rockefeller estate, a river town Main Street, or a good ghost story. Below is a quick guide to the kinds of stays on offer. Each category page lists specific properties, distances, and pet policies.

Pet friendly rooms available at this hotel. We travel with pets too. Wherever possible we've marked pet-friendly properties with a paw-print stamp on the category pages. Policies vary and can change, so always confirm when you book.

Find your kind of stay

Hotels — Full-service comfort, mostly clustered a couple of miles out in Tarrytown, with indoor pools, on-site dining, and quick access to Metro-North. Standouts include the historic Tarrytown House Estate, a pair of 19th-century mansions on 26 acres (with a resident ghost in Room 293, if the reviews are to be believed), and Windrose on Hudson, perched above the valley with sweeping river views. Good for weekends away, families, and anyone who wants a proper front desk.

Inns and Bed & Breakfasts — The most characterful way to stay, scattered through the river towns and rolling hills 10 to 25 miles out. Think fireplaces and Frette linens at the Bedford Post Inn, a tavern serving travelers since 1761 at The Bird and Bottle, a former convent turned spa at The Abbey Inn, and a firehouse-turned-B&B overhanging a Hudson tributary at RiverView — next door, as it happens, to a genuine 1887 haunting. Ideal for romantic getaways and fall foliage weekends.

Motels and Budget — Comfortable, affordable, and well-placed for exploring without stretching the budget. Extended-stay suites with kitchens, river-view rooms in Peekskill, and easy-on, easy-off options near the highways — several with pet-friendly rooms.

Camping — For those who'd rather trade a lobby for a campfire. The wider Hudson Valley offers tent sites, cabins, yurts, and RV spots at sprawling state and county parks — from 14,000-acre Fahnestock to the Hudson-jutting peninsula of Croton Point Park, the one option close enough to skip the commute to Halloween events. Note that this isn't RV-friendly parkway country, so plan your route ahead.

Good to know

There are no hotels in the village of Sleepy Hollow itself, but a short drive brings you to the full range above in and around Tarrytown and the neighboring river towns. Rates and availability shift with the seasons, so call ahead to confirm — and book early if your visit lands in October or around college graduation season, both of which fill up fast.
