The Headless Horseman Files

August 4, 2026 by Jim Logan
Headless Horseman Files at Philipsburg Manor.

Everyone knows the Horseman took Ichabod Crane. Nobody has ever proved it.

Washington Irving left the ending open on purpose. Ichabod vanishes; a shattered pumpkin is found by the bridge; the village decides what it wants to believe. The Headless Horseman Files takes that ambiguity seriously and hands the case to you.

A guide leads your group on a 45-minute walk through the grounds of Philipsburg Manor, where the townsfolk of 18th-century Sleepy Hollow are waiting to give their accounts. Fiery Hans Van Ripper, whose horse Ichabod borrowed and never returned. Charming Katrina Van Tassel, who had just refused him. Spectral Hulda the Witch. Bold Brom Bones, who had every reason to want the schoolmaster gone. Each has a tale. Each has a motive.

You piece the clues together and decide for yourselves. And keep an eye on the shadows — the Headless Horseman is here too, and unlike everywhere else in Sleepy Hollow, he doesn’t wait for nightfall.

Why this one is different

Almost every Horseman event in Sleepy Hollow happens after dark. This one runs from 10 am, which changes what it’s good for:

  • It works for young children who won’t last through a 9 pm event.
  • It leaves your evening free. Do the Files in the afternoon and the Blaze or Twilight Village the same night.
  • You can actually see Philipsburg Manor. The 18th-century milling complex and its grounds are the setting, and in daylight they’re part of the pleasure rather than a dark backdrop.

Know before you go

  • When: October 2–31, 2026, Fridays through Sundays. Timed entries between 10:00 am and 4:15 pm.
  • How long: 45 minutes, guided, on foot.
  • Where: Philipsburg Manor, 381 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, NY 10591. Overflow parking at 100 Continental Street.
  • Tickets: Adults $35, seniors and young adults $34, children $25. Historic Hudson Valley members save 15%. Timed slots, so book ahead.
  • Ages: Recommended for 8 and up. It’s played largely tongue-in-cheek, but see the notes below before bringing younger children.
  • Getting there without a car: Philipsburg Manor is a manageable walk from Metro-North’s Hudson Line — see our guide to visiting Sleepy Hollow without a car.

A few things to know about the experience

Historic Hudson Valley flags three things, and they’re worth repeating rather than burying:

  • One portion takes place in low light or near darkness, which can be disorienting or frightening for younger children.
  • There are eerie moments — light suspense, and references to the supernatural and to death.
  • One scene moves from bright outdoors into a low-light interior. That transition can be uncomfortable for anyone with light sensitivity or photosensitivity.

While you’re at Philipsburg Manor

The same site hosts Twilight Village after dark and The Spirits of Sleepy Hollow Country, where illusionists summon the Horseman rather than staging him. For every place he turns up this season, see where to see the Headless Horseman, or our full guide to Halloween in Sleepy Hollow.
