The church holds an impressive array of painted and stained glass windows dating from the 1850s through the 20th century, set inside a Gothic Revival building complete with gargoyles.

Washington Irving, author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” followed the Rev. Dr. William Creighton here from Zion Episcopal Church in Dobbs Ferry, joining the congregation in 1848. Irving was a vestryman, Sunday School teacher, and regular parishioner at Christ Church until his death in 1859 — he even donated the main altar, made of Normandy marble. The ivy on the church tower comes from cuttings Irving brought back from Sir Walter Scott’s home, Abbotsford, in Scotland, and his pew, Bible, and warden’s key are still preserved. An estimated 5,000 people descended on this small church on the day of Irving’s funeral — far exceeding its capacity.

Today the parish is known as Christ Church San Marcos, reflecting a bilingual community that worships in both English and Spanish — a legacy of the San Marcos Mission it started in 1993 to serve the area’s growing Hispanic population. The church also hosts the Community Food Pantry of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, along with concerts and other community events throughout the year.

Christ Church is not currently open for regular historic tours, though the parish hopes to welcome visitors for tours again in the future. In the meantime, visitors are welcome to attend a Sunday service, stop in during office hours, or check the church calendar for upcoming concerts and events, which offer the best chance to see the windows and interior in person.
