Drawing inspiration from Kykuit’s stunning gardens, architecture, and landscapes, participants in this two-day immersive workshop will strengthen their drawing and painting skills while exploring the expressive possibilities of gouache. Gouache (pronounced “gwash”) is an opaque, water-based paint that combines the luminous qualities of watercolor with exceptional coverage and versatility, allowing painters to layer colors and easily rework their work. Participants will also be introduced to acrylic gouache and watercolor, and how these complementary media pair with traditional gouache.

The workshop covers key fundamentals — light and shadow, color relationships, composition, and structure — through demonstrations and hands-on practice, with an emphasis on rich color and developing a personal painting voice. Working on location encourages close observation of shifting light, atmosphere, and seasonal color, deepening participants’ connection to place.

Individual instruction and group discussion will help refine each artist’s approach. By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a collection of paintings and greater confidence in their own artistic voice.

A boxed lunch is provided; participants should bring their own art materials (a full list is emailed after enrollment). Suitable for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced — applicants will be asked to submit a brief statement on their background and goals for the workshop.

Good to know: Some walking is required on uphill, uneven, and gravel terrain, plus stairs — wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and bring a reusable water bottle.
