Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Tower Chimes

April 2 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free
This is a reproduction of a J.C. Deagan tower chimes advertisement.

A musical celebration on the 100th anniversary of the cemetery’s Washington Irving Memorial Tower Chimes!

Installed in 1923 but silent for decades, the cemetery’s 10-note Deagan Tower Chimes were recently restored to operation. Local church organists will demonstrate how this unique instrument is played by keyboard. Join Washington Irving himself as he awakens these chimes from their Rip Van Winkle-like slumber!

The J. C. Deagan Company of Chicago manufactured and installed about 440 sets of tower chimes over a period of about 40 years. Many have since been scrapped or lost to when the structures which housed them were razed. Of the Deagan tower installations that remain in their original locations, only a handful are in operating condition. Sleepy Hollow Cemetery‘s set is one of only four in New York State known to be working.

Rain or shine.
