SUMMARY:Solar Eclipse Viewing Party
DESCRIPTION:Meet the dark side of the moon\, as shade covers the land and the temperature suddenly drops during one of the most awe-inspiring natural phenomena! \nRockefeller State Park Preserve will  have a telescope with a solar filter set up for this rare and exciting event. They will provide AAS-approved solar viewing glasses to 500 attendees on a first-come\, first-served basis. There will also be a craft station for guests to create pinhole viewers while supplies last. \nThe last total solar eclipse in New York was in 1925\, nearly 100 years ago! The next total solar eclipse in the United States will be in 2045\, but NY won’t be in the path of totality again until 2079. \nThe moon’s shadow will obscure 90% of the sun in our area\, with the eclipse reaching its maximum around approximately 3:25 pm. \nThe viewing area will be on the Overlook Trail\, a short uphill walk from the Visitor’s Center. \nYou are welcome to bring a lightweight folding chair to the site. No picnics\, frisbees or ball-playing allowed. \nThere are no trash cans on site\, please carry out any trash with you when you leave. \nWhether you join the park or decide to view from home\, please take precautions and never look at the sun directly\, including while it is eclipsed. See NASA’s website for more safety information. \nCost: FREE. Please register so park staff know how many people to expect. \nParking: $6 per vehicle in the main lot. Street parking along Rt. 117 is free. \nPhoto courtesy of Vinny Coulehan

SUMMARY:Birding at Rockefeller State Park Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Rockefeller State Park Preserve together with adjoining private lands is one of the largest undeveloped tracts of land in Westchester County. With its mix of woodlands\, fields\, wetlands and a lake\, the Preserve supports a diversity of species\, especially birds. Come find out why the National Audubon Society has designated this an Important Bird Area. A hint: nearly 200 bird species have been spotted here! Our local Audubon chapter\, Saw Mill River Audubon\, regularly leads small group bird walks here. Group sizes are limited\, registration is required. They are good for all levels of birding experience and beginners are very welcome! Walks are for adults and youth age 8 or older. Let the society know in advance if you want to borrow binoculars by emailing them at: office@sawmillriveraudubon.org
