SUMMARY:Sketching Light: Chagall's Windows for Union Church
DESCRIPTION:Sketching Light: Chagall’s Windows for Union Church provides a rare opportunity for visitors to explore the creative process of renowned artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985). \nIn the 1960s\, Chagall was commissioned by the Rockefeller family to create a large stained-glass window in memory of John D. Rockefeller\, Jr.\, as well as eight smaller windows\, for Union Church of Pocantico Hills. The resulting jewel-toned panels depict Old and New Testament subjects\, including the parable of the Good Samaritan and several Hebrew prophets. \nSketching Light features 27 mixed media works on paper from Chagall’s preparatory studies for the project. These works\, acquired by David Rockefeller in 1975 for the Rockefeller Archive Center\, will be on public display for the first time since 1978. \nChagall’s first ideas for each window are roughly laid out in pencil or ink sketches. In successive iterations\, he adds color with paint\, pastel\, and collage to create a multi-media maquette. It was important to Chagall that the maquettes capture the effect of sunlight on glass through the color values and opacity he depicted in the sketches. \nOne of the most renowned modernists of the 20th century\, Chagall produced 10\,000 works during his 75-year career. Although primarily known as a painter\, the artist worked in a wide variety of materials and techniques\, devoting himself to stained glass during the final decades of his career. Union Church was Marc Chagall’s first stained glass commission in the United States and remains the only church with Chagall windows in the country. \nSketching Light: Chagall’s Windows for Union Church  is a collaboration between the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Rockefeller Archive Center. It is co-curated by Katrina London and Michele Hiltzik Beckerman in celebration of the Archive Center’s 50th Anniversary. \nAll visitors must reserve a free timed-entry ticket prior to visiting. \nVisitors are encouraged to visit Union Church of Pocantico Hills to see the completed windows on a tour led by Historic Hudson Valley. Separate tickets are required. Directions and tour information for Union Church is available at the DR Center and online.

SUMMARY:A Palo Seco Flamenco Company presents FIERAS
DESCRIPTION:“The artists in A Palo Seco go far beyond showcasing their great musical and dance talent—they offer the experience of being transported by something deep and powerful stirring inside.” —New York Theater Wire \nA Palo Seco is a New York-based flamenco company that strives to develop a unique voice\, employing its dancers’ expertise while taking into account the context in which they live. Its work exposes audiences to a new way of looking at flamenco\, combining traditional techniques with a modern\, metropolitan flare. \nThe company will perform a work-in-process showing of Fieras\, a production inspired by women who have survived and thrived after experiencing domestic violence. Fieraswas created with support from an ArtsWestchester “Voices for Change” grant\, which supported a collaboration between A Palo Seco artistic director Rebecca Tomas and Hope’s Door\, a domestic violence advocacy organization and shelter located in Westchester County. The poignant performance draws from Tomas’ interviews with Hope’s Door staff and survivors of domestic violence. \nThe performance will be followed by a conversation with Tomas and staff members of Hope’s Door\, as well as a reception with special access to the David Rockefeller Creative Arts Center gallery\, currently showing Portraits of Process.

SUMMARY:Poetry of Kyle Dacuyan
DESCRIPTION:“Whatever outcome or future we find ourselves in\, whenever and wherever this reaches you\, we will need the defiance of poetry.” \n–Kyle Dacuyan \nPoet Kyle Dacuyan’s work encourages readers to question the forces of work\, profit\, borders\, ownership\, and hierarchy. His powerful voice asks what we can do when freed of the expectation to prove function and demonstrate work. \nDuring his residency at The Pocantico Center\, Dacuyan will present a work-in-process reading of Dad Rock\, an episodic monologue bringing together poetry\, movement\, video\, and original music composition. The work considers the interrelations of authority\, discipline\, and punishment; the construction of patriarchal archetypes in music and other popular culture; and the ways these connect with global patterns of imperial violence. A reception will follow. \nThis event is presented in partnership with The Shed and the RBF Culpeper Arts & Culture program.
