Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

I send you herewith a plan of a rural cemetery projected by some of the worthies of Tarrytown, on the woody hills adjacent to the Sleepy Hollow Church. I have no pecuniary interest in it, yet I hope it may succeed, as it will keep that beautiful and umbrageous neighborhood sacred from the anti-poetical and all-leveling axe. Besides, I trust that I shall one day lay my bones there.

-Washington Irving

“Sleepy Hollow has it all; spooky lilting 18th century death’s head tombstones, twisting narrow roads, majestic mausoleums and magnificent statuary, perfectly placed onto a hilly woodland canvas. It’s a cemetery with a capital ‘C’.”

Doug Keister, Stories in Stone

No restroom facilities at this time. Grounds close at 4:30 pm, no entry after 4:30.

Founded in 1849, this private cemetery is non-profit and non-sectarian. There are over 45,000 interments in its 90 acres.

Famous burials include Washington Irving, Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, Samuel Gompers, Elizabeth Arden, Leona Helmsley, Brooke Astor, and William Rockefeller. Walk or drive the grounds on your own or try an afternoon or evening guided tour.

Free legal-sized maps, perfect for a short, self-guided tour to major figures in the cemetery, are available in literature boxes at both entrances to the grounds.

A full-color, 17” x 20” map to more than 50 special features of the cemetery is available for purchase online through Sleepy Hollow Gifts.
