SUMMARY:An Audience with Poe
DESCRIPTION:Sip\, savor\, and shiver with Poe’s darkest tales brought to life through storytelling\, cocktails\, and confections.\nThis fall\, professional storytellers bring to life the “powerful graphic effect” that Washington Irving once praised in Edgar Allan Poe’s writing\, with haunting renditions of The Raven\, The Tell-Tale Heart\, The Black Cat\, and The Masque of the Red Death. We pair the tales with complimentary cocktails or mocktails designed to capture the spirit of the stories. \nThe evening begins in the Library at Historic Hudson Valley\, where visitors enjoy their first drink while standing among the shelves\, listening to a creepy tale. From there\, the experience deepens in an intimate theater setting\, with three more of Poe’s dark masterpieces performed in turn\, as those gathered sip drinks\, nibble biscotti\, and savor a piece of fine chocolate—indulgences to savor in the night’s shadows. \nOctober 3 – November 1\, performances Fridays-Sundays plus Columbus Day Monday. Multiple performances per day\, see organizer’s website for actual times. \nPerformance length: 1 hour and 30 minutes. \n\nRECOMMENDED FOR AGES 14+

SUMMARY:Midcentury Homes of Holly Place: A Tour of Westchester Historic Home Interiors
DESCRIPTION:Step inside midcentury modern homes and see and learn about many more as we tour one of Westchester’s “hidden” neighborhoods of historic homes in Briarcliff Manor! \nWhat may be passed by as an unassuming cul-de-sac\, Holly Place is a lovely haven of about a dozen unique dwellings from the 1960s and 70s by the architectural\, engineering\, and landscape design firm Wenning Associates. \nSpecial interior stops include a 1966 home that blends dramatic height and expansive glass with the warmth of wood ceilings and textured brick and a home from 1967 anchored by its octagonal foyer that combines full-height windows\, clerestories\, and partial walls to fill the spaces with light and playful shadows. \nLed by MIT graduate Harry Wenning\, the Wenning Associates design team included the award-winning landscape architect Armand Benedek. Wenning and his firm designed a long list of impressive modernist buildings in the region\, including churches\, country clubs\, and residences. One of his homes\, a hilltop oasis with indoor pool\, was a featured stop on our tour of modernist homes in Fairfield\, CT\, earlier this year! \nWenning’s name may not be a household one\, but his talent is once again beginning to get some recognition; the firm’s nearby Ossining project of homes known as Robinwood was recognized for its architectural significance and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. Join the Holly Place tour for the unique chance to step inside Wenning homes and experience his talent! \nWalking tour. Offered one day only. Space is limited. \nTwo times available: 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tour length approximately two hours. \nThe tour will take place along Holly Place in Briarcliff Manor. Specific meet-up location in the neighborhood to be provided via email.

SUMMARY:Classic Daytime Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Soak up the beauty of this 176-year old cemetery while your guide regales you with stories of the fascinating people resting here in peace. \nThis two-hour daytime walk is the perfect way “to have a colloquy among the tombs” as Washington Irving\, famous author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”\, did himself back in 1849. \nYou’ll pay homage to the great author\, stop by some of the most interesting monuments in the old section before heading north to visit the final resting places of two-term Chicago Mayor Walter Gurnee\, steel titan Andrew Carnegie\, oilman William Rockefeller\, two people vital to the success of Wells Fargo and American Express\, and much more. Admire beautiful art\, architecture and cool cemetery symbolism along the way. This tour gives a great overview of why Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is so famous. \nPlease note that the Classic Daytime Tour is the same route as the Classic Evening Lantern tour. The content is exactly the same – it just starts in a different location. \nDates: Every Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon and 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in October; 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. only in September and November.
