SUMMARY:Octagon House Classic Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Armour-Stiner Octagon House\, a registered National Historic Landmark\, was created as a summer retreat by tea-importer Joseph Stiner. Its shape was based on the theories of Orson Squire Fowler\, a phrenologist\, who believed octagonal houses enclosed more space\, allowed the sun in at all times\, and permitted more views into the landscape. \nThe tour includes a brief history of specimen plants original to the property\, the carefully restored Lord and Burnham greenhouse\, the wonderfully romantic foxglove garden\, (shaped in the exact size and footprint of the house itself!)\, and the charming Octagonal birdhouse\, (a scaled-down replica of the house). Visitors will also experience the house’s wrap-around veranda that offers 360-degree views of the lush landscape\, as well as particular architectural details which relate specifically to native plants and foliage of the grounds. Finally\, the tour will continue inside the house with an interior tour of the first\, second and third floors\, which retain their magnificent ornamentation and furnishings. \nTimed tours only\, last tour of the day starts at 4 pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance. \nThe Octagon House is a private residence. In exchange for the opportunity to experience this one-of-a-kind historic home\, all visitors must follow house rules.

DESCRIPTION:Journey to Colonial America! Wander along a woodland path and enter the year 1750\, when Philipsburg Manor was a thriving milling and trading complex that was home to several hundred tenant farmers and twenty three enslaved individuals of African descent. \nStep into the gristmill and learn about the work of Caesar\, the enslaved African miller. Tour the manor house\, where period artifacts and touchable reproductions bring to life the stories of the Philipse family and the enslaved community. Visit the activity center and explore the daily life and labor of the Manor’s diverse inhabitants. Hear the Manor’s history from the perspective of those who lived and toiled there. \nFor 2022\, Philipsburg Manor will be open May 6 – November 13; Fridays-Sundays\, as well as holiday Mondays (May 30\, July 4\, September 5\, October 10). Guided tours are available between 10:30 AM-3:30 PM. Tickets are for timed entry.
