SUMMARY:Lyndhurst Ramble Tour
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the Hudson River Valley Ramble\, Lyndhurst offers a walking tour of the historic estate\, a Gothic Revival masterpiece overlooking the Hudson River. The site reflects over 180 years of life on the Hudson River covering 67 park-like acres. Lyndhurst’s magnificent grounds contain an award-winning rose garden\, a fern garden\, rock garden\, specimen trees\, and the now-aged Lindens for which the property is named. The tour ends with a stroll along landscaped pathways that offer spectacular views of the Hudson River. \nThe 2-hour guided Lyndhurst Ramble Tour starts at the Lyndhurst Welcome Center\, where visitors can check-in and purchase bottled water. Public restrooms are located in the Welcome Center and Bowling Alley Pavilion. \nPlease note that this outdoor tour requires extensive walking on hilly grounds for about two hours. Ramble tours depart rain or shine; the event is canceled in severe weather or lightning. Plan to arrive at the Welcome Center 15 minutes before your tour.

SUMMARY:Octagon House Classic Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Armour-Stiner Octagon House\, a registered National Historic Landmark\, was created as a summer retreat by tea-importer Joseph Stiner. Its shape was based on the theories of Orson Squire Fowler\, a phrenologist\, who believed octagonal houses enclosed more space\, allowed the sun in at all times\, and permitted more views into the landscape. \nThe tour includes a brief history of specimen plants original to the property\, the carefully restored Lord and Burnham greenhouse\, the wonderfully romantic foxglove garden\, (shaped in the exact size and footprint of the house itself!)\, and the charming Octagonal birdhouse\, (a scaled-down replica of the house). Visitors will also experience the house’s wrap-around veranda that offers 360-degree views of the lush landscape\, as well as particular architectural details which relate specifically to native plants and foliage of the grounds. Finally\, the tour will continue inside the house with an interior tour of the first\, second and third floors\, which retain their magnificent ornamentation and furnishings. \nTimed tours only\, last tour of the day starts at 4 pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance. \nThe Octagon House is a private residence. In exchange for the opportunity to experience this one-of-a-kind historic home\, all visitors must follow house rules.

SUMMARY:Birding at Rockefeller State Park Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Rockefeller State Park Preserve together with adjoining private lands is one of the largest undeveloped tracts of land in Westchester County. With its mix of woodlands\, fields\, wetlands and a lake\, the Preserve supports a diversity of species\, especially birds. Come find out why the National Audubon Society has designated this an Important Bird Area. A hint: nearly 200 bird species have been spotted here! Our local Audubon chapter\, Saw Mill River Audubon\, regularly leads small group bird walks here. Group sizes are limited\, registration is required. They are good for all levels of birding experience and beginners are very welcome! Walks are for adults and youth age 8 or older. Let the society know in advance if you want to borrow binoculars by emailing them at: office@sawmillriveraudubon.org
