SUMMARY:The Geology of Rockefeller Park Preserve\, Sleepy Hollow
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Sites of Interest Along the Old Croton Aqueduct series. \nRockefeller State Park Preserve is known for its wildlife\, carriage trails\, and scenic vistas. The park’s 55 miles of trails allow visitors to view the various habitats of the 1\,771-acre park\, which include open meadows\, dense forest\, meandering brooks\, wetlands\, and the 24-acre Swan Lake. SUMMARY:Octagon House Classic Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Armour-Stiner Octagon House\, a registered National Historic Landmark\, was created as a summer retreat by tea-importer Joseph Stiner. Its shape was based on the theories of Orson Squire Fowler\, a phrenologist\, who believed octagonal houses enclosed more space\, allowed the sun in at all times\, and permitted more views into the landscape. \nThe tour includes a brief history of specimen plants original to the property\, the carefully restored Lord and Burnham greenhouse\, the wonderfully romantic foxglove garden\, (shaped in the exact size and footprint of the house itself!)\, and the charming Octagonal birdhouse\, (a scaled-down replica of the house). Visitors will also experience the house’s wrap-around veranda that offers 360-degree views of the lush landscape\, as well as particular architectural details which relate specifically to native plants and foliage of the grounds. Finally\, the tour will continue inside the house with an interior tour of the first\, second and third floors\, which retain their magnificent ornamentation and furnishings. \nTimed tours only\, last tour of the day starts at 4 pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance. \nThe Octagon House is a private residence. In exchange for the opportunity to experience this one-of-a-kind historic home\, all visitors must follow house rules.

SUMMARY:Pacifica Quartet with Orion Weiss\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Recognized for its virtuosity\, exuberant performance style\, and sometimes daring repertory choices\, the Pacifica Quartet has gained international stature as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today. The quartet was nominated for Grammy Awards multiple times and won in January 2021 for their album Contemporary Voices. \nNow in residence at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music\, the Quartet held that same position at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 2009 to 2012. In 2009 it received the Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance. \nOrion Weiss is one of the most sought-after soloists in his generation of young American musicians.

SUMMARY:Birding at Rockefeller State Park Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Rockefeller State Park Preserve together with adjoining private lands is one of the largest undeveloped tracts of land in Westchester County. With its mix of woodlands\, fields\, wetlands and a lake\, the Preserve supports a diversity of species\, especially birds. Come find out why the National Audubon Society has designated this an Important Bird Area. A hint: nearly 200 bird species have been spotted here! Our local Audubon chapter\, Saw Mill River Audubon\, regularly leads small group bird walks here. Group sizes are limited\, registration is required. They are good for all levels of birding experience and beginners are very welcome! Walks are for adults and youth age 8 or older. Let the society know in advance if you want to borrow binoculars by emailing them at: office@sawmillriveraudubon.org
