SUMMARY:Birding at Rockefeller State Park Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Rockefeller State Park Preserve together with adjoining private lands is one of the largest undeveloped tracts of land in Westchester County. With its mix of woodlands\, fields\, wetlands and a lake\, the Preserve supports a diversity of species\, especially birds. Come find out why the National Audubon Society has designated this an Important Bird Area. A hint: nearly 200 bird species have been spotted here! Our local Audubon chapter\, Saw Mill River Audubon\, regularly leads small group bird walks here. Group sizes are limited\, registration is required. They are good for all levels of birding experience and beginners are very welcome! Walks are for adults and youth age 8 or older. Let the society know in advance if you want to borrow binoculars by emailing them at: office@sawmillriveraudubon.org

SUMMARY:History in the Landscape Tour - Lyndhurst
DESCRIPTION:This outdoor walking tour examines the history of the landscaped Lyndhurst estate throughout three families’ ownership. Visitors are led down from the Lyndhurst Veranda and its marble garden furniture and fountains through a series of garden sitting areas and rock outcroppings known as “rockeries” which offer sweeping views of the Hudson River. Trees\, plantings\, and various outbuildings are discussed in passing. The tour concludes inside the restored 19th-century bowling alley with an exhibit on Lyndhurst’s fourth owner\, Helen Gould\, and Lyndhurst neighbor Madam C. J. Walker. \nThe tour departs from the Welcome Center and requires the ability to walk over the uneven hilly ground for 90 minutes. While much of this tour goes downhill on cement pathways and stairs\, it requires an uphill walk to return to the Welcome Center. \n2022 Dates: Friday – Sunday\, May 6 – June 12.

SUMMARY:Octagon House Classic Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Armour-Stiner Octagon House\, a registered National Historic Landmark\, was created as a summer retreat by tea-importer Joseph Stiner. Its shape was based on the theories of Orson Squire Fowler\, a phrenologist\, who believed octagonal houses enclosed more space\, allowed the sun in at all times\, and permitted more views into the landscape. \nThe tour includes a brief history of specimen plants original to the property\, the carefully restored Lord and Burnham greenhouse\, the wonderfully romantic foxglove garden\, (shaped in the exact size and footprint of the house itself!)\, and the charming Octagonal birdhouse\, (a scaled-down replica of the house). Visitors will also experience the house’s wrap-around veranda that offers 360-degree views of the lush landscape\, as well as particular architectural details which relate specifically to native plants and foliage of the grounds. Finally\, the tour will continue inside the house with an interior tour of the first\, second and third floors\, which retain their magnificent ornamentation and furnishings. \nTimed tours only\, last tour of the day starts at 4 pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance. \nThe Octagon House is a private residence. In exchange for the opportunity to experience this one-of-a-kind historic home\, all visitors must follow house rules.

SUMMARY:Houndmouth with special guest Sam Filiatreau
DESCRIPTION:In late 2011\, Matt Myers\, Zak Appleby and Shane Cody started playing music together in a historic home in New Albany\, Indiana dubbed “The Green House.” Its rooms were adorned with relics from times past\, so it was no surprise that songs such as “Penitentiary” bounced off the walls. Nostalgic sounds from their first album seemed to serve as a welcome escape for listeners from the relentless demands of the digital age. But if you asked any one of the guys\, they were ‘just having fun.’ \n\n\nHoundmouth signed with legendary indie label Rough Trade Records in 2012. From The Hills Below The City landed them on several world-famous platforms such as fellow lovable Hoosier\, David Letterman’s stage. When vocalist\, guitarist\, and songwriter Matt Myers first spoke with big-name producer Dave Cobb prior to working together on their sophomore LP Little Neon Limelight\, the two laughingly agreed to “not make another fucking boring Americana record.” A natural sounding album captured in a familiar fashion came together\, except this time with a #1 adult alternative radio single in “Sedona.” “I never once thought of us as an Americana band\,” says drummer Shane Cody. “The four of us were just a rock band\, but some of us had Southern accents\,” he laughs. Cue Golden Age\, the third album featuring some of the band’s most innovative and experimental songs yet. Coining the term “retro future”\, Houndmouth combined creative songwriting with avant-garde instrumentation like the synthesized roar of an actual black jaguar on the track “Black Jaguar”. \nThe band finds themselves recording and also touring their upcoming untitled fourth album expected to release in 2021. From their humble start\, genre-defining hits\, and experimentation\, Houndmouth has and continues to make their impactful felt with the unique take on storytelling through music.

DESCRIPTION:Join Rockwood docent David Teich on an adventure into the past as he explores Rockwood Hall and its rich history through stories of the land and the people who called it home. \nFormer estate of William Rockefeller\, this site boasts scenic views overlooking the Hudson\, lush forests\, and remnants of 19th century luxuries. Leashed dogs are welcome. \nPlease bring water to drink and wear comfortable closed-toed shoes; the hike is about 2 miles roundtrip. \nThis hike is at Rockwood Hall\, DO NOT go to the main Preserve entrance. The parking lot is on Kendal Way off route 117\, just after the intersection of Phelps and Regeneron. If the lot is full\, you may park in the Phelps garage (free). \nGather at the kiosk at the top of the hill across the street from the parking lot.
