SUMMARY:Nick Lowe’s Quality Rock & Roll Review Starring Los Straitjackets
DESCRIPTION:Nick Lowe has made his mark as a producer (Elvis Costello-Graham Parker-Pretenders-The Damned)\, songwriter of at least three songs you know by heart\, short-lived career as a pop star\, and a lengthy term as a musicians’ musician. But in his current ‘second act’ as a silver-haired\, tender-hearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter\, he has no equal. Starting with 1995′s ‘The Impossible Bird’ through to 2011′s ‘The Old Magic\,’ Nick has turned out a fantastic string of albums\, each one devised in his West London home\, and recorded with a core of musicians who possess the same veteran savvy. Lowe brings wit and understated excellence to every performance\, leading Ben Ratliff of the New York Times to describe his live show as “elegant and nearly devastating.” His new 4 song EP “Tokyo Bay” features Los Straitjackets as his backing band \n\n\nLos Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of the Ventures\, The Shadows\, and with Link Wray and Dick Dale as a jumping off point\, the band has taken their unique\, high energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks\, the “Jackets” have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums\, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows. \nTheir most recent album “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace Love & Los Straitjackets” consists of instrumental covers of Nick Lowe Songs.

SUMMARY:Monty Alexander Trio
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss the legendary jazz pianist Monty Alexander perform at Tarrytown’s Jazz Forum! \nFifty-five years after he moved to the United States from Kingston\, Jamaica\, his home town\, Monty Alexander is an American classic\, touring the world relentlessly with various projects\, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. His spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making\, effervescent grooves\, sophisticated voicings\, a romantic spirit\, and a consistent predisposition\, as Alexander accurately states\, “to build up the heat and kick up a storm.” \nIn the course of any given performance\, Alexander applies those aesthetics to repertoire spanning a broad range of jazz and Jamaican musical expression—the American songbook and the blues\, gospel and bebop\, calypso and reggae. Like his “eternal inspiration\,” Erroll Garner\, Alexander—cited as the fifth greatest jazz pianist ever in The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing) and mentioned in Robert Doerschuk’s 88: The Giants of Jazz Piano—gives the hardcore-jazz-obsessed much to dig into while also communicating the message to the squarest “civilian.” \nBorn on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944\, Alexander was playing Christmas carols by ear at 4\, entertaining neighbors and relatives by 5\, taking his first piano lessons at 6. He resisted formal instruction\, but still\, growing up in Kingston\, absorbed all the musical flavors that comprise his mature sonic palette. “I soaked up everything—the calypso band playing at the swimming pool in the country\, local guys at jam sessions who wished they were Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis\, a dance band playing Jamaican melodies\, songs that Belafonte would have sung\,” he recalls. When Alexander was 9\, his father\, a Kingston merchant\, brought him to hear and play for the legendary pianist Eddie Heywood. At 10\, he saw Nat “King” Cole play at Kingston’s Carib Theater\, the same venue where\, at 13\, he heard a concert featuring Louis Armstrong. \n

SUMMARY:Octagon House Classic Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Armour-Stiner Octagon House\, a registered National Historic Landmark\, was created as a summer retreat by tea-importer Joseph Stiner. Its shape was based on the theories of Orson Squire Fowler\, a phrenologist\, who believed octagonal houses enclosed more space\, allowed the sun in at all times\, and permitted more views into the landscape. \nThe tour includes a brief history of specimen plants original to the property\, the carefully restored Lord and Burnham greenhouse\, the wonderfully romantic foxglove garden\, (shaped in the exact size and footprint of the house itself!)\, and the charming Octagonal birdhouse\, (a scaled-down replica of the house). Visitors will also experience the house’s wrap-around veranda that offers 360-degree views of the lush landscape\, as well as particular architectural details which relate specifically to native plants and foliage of the grounds. Finally\, the tour will continue inside the house with an interior tour of the first\, second and third floors\, which retain their magnificent ornamentation and furnishings. \nTimed tours only\, last tour of the day starts at 4 pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance. \nThe Octagon House is a private residence. In exchange for the opportunity to experience this one-of-a-kind historic home\, all visitors must follow house rules.

SUMMARY:The Musical Box Performs Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
DESCRIPTION:The greatest rock opera ever created\, The Lamb lies Down on Broadway\, the last collaborative effort between legendary Peter Gabriel and Genesis\, is to be revived one last time… The end of an era. \n\n\nThe Musical Box\, the only group in the world granted a licence from Peter Gabriel and Genesis\, will recreate in its entirety the original 1974-75 performance in painstaking details\, right down to the original slide show. One final chance to witness this unique live experience. \nAcclaimed for its historical re-enactment of early Genesis\, TMB has performed for more than a million spectators worldwide in some of the most prestigious venues such as the london royal albert hall and the paris olympia. Tmb had the privilege of hosting phil collins as a performing guest. In its quest for authenticity\, tmb is cited as the best interpretation group in the world and the international reference for early genesis. \n “They’re not a tribute band\, they have taken a period and are faithfully reproducing it in the same way that someone would do a theatrical production” – Phil Collins \n«…so much has been said about The Lamb since we finished\, since Peter left\, [The Musical Box’ recreation of the show] is the only way to see it since it was never filmed»” – Phil Collins \n“The Musical Box recreated\, very accurately I must say\, what Genesis was doing.  I saw them in Bristol with my children so they could see what their father did back then” – Peter Gabriel

SUMMARY:Kristina Marinova - 4 Rhapsodies
DESCRIPTION:Critically acclaimed pianist Kristina Marinova performs four rhapsodies not often heard together in a live performance. These works for solo piano present a range of technical demands as well as contrasted moods\, colors\, and tonal progressions. They express spontaneity and bursts of improvisation with interplay between stark drama\, dance\, virtuosity with dazzling and tender lyrical reflection. \n\n“Listening to neoclassical works like “4 Rhapsodies” we instantly realize that music is like a message from God. Grab this opportunity to enjoy beautiful\, virtuoso piano with elegant melody and flow of sound. Exquisite composition.” (In a recent review of the 4 Rhapsodies album with Navona Records).

With its mix of woodlands\, fields\, wetlands and a lake\, the Preserve supports a diversity of species\, especially birds. Come find out why the National Audubon Society has designated this an Important Bird Area. A hint: nearly 200 bird species have been spotted here! Our local Audubon chapter\, Saw Mill River Audubon\, regularly leads small group bird walks here. Group sizes are limited\, registration is required. They are good for all levels of birding experience and beginners are very welcome! Walks are for adults and youth age 8 or older. Let the society know in advance if you want to borrow binoculars by emailing them at: office@sawmillriveraudubon.org
