SUMMARY:Classic Daytime Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Soak up the beauty of this 173-year old cemetery while your guide regales you with stories of the fascinating people resting here in peace. \nThis two-hour daytime walk is the perfect way “to have a colloquy among the tombs” as Washington Irving\, famous author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”\, did himself back in 1849. \nYou’ll pay homage to the great author\, stop by some of the most interesting monuments in the old section before heading north to visit the final resting places of two-term Chicago Mayor Walter Gurnee\, steel titan Andrew Carnegie\, oilman William Rockefeller\, two people vital to the success of Wells Fargo and American Express\, and much more. Admire beautiful art\, architecture and cool cemetery symbolism along the way.  This tour gives a great overview of why Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is so famous. \nPlease note that the Classic Daytime Tour is the same route as the Classic Evening Lantern tour. The content is exactly the same – it just starts in a different location. \nDates: Every Saturday and Sunday 2:00 – 4:00 p.m through November 27th.

SUMMARY:Dover String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Music welcomes the return of the excellent young Dover Quartet\, lauded by The New Yorker as both “exciting and accomplished.” The Wall Street Journal has described their playing as “masterly\, nuanced” with “gutsy and earthy sound\,” while the Santa Fe New Mexican has said that to hear them is to be in “string quartet nirvana.” Although violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt will leave the quartet at the end of August\, they have announced that they are “excited to share the news that the Dover Quartet has appointed Hezekiah Leung as its violist for a season-long appointment starting in September. You may know Hezekiah as a founding member of the Rolston String Quartet\, the first prize winner of the 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition and the recipient of the 2018 Cleveland Quartet Award. Hezekiah’s excellent artistry and musicianship\, combined with his experience performing in an award-winning string quartet\, make him an excellent fit for this appointment. Joel\, Bryan\, and Camden are thrilled to begin performing with him.” \nThe quartet was nominated for the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for their recording of Robert Schumann’s string quartets. \n\n\nThe Dover Quartet has released three albums on Cedille Records: Tribute: Dover Quartet Plays Mozart\, Voices of Defiance\, and Beethoven Complete String Quartets\, Volume 1 – The Opus 18 Quartets. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis afternoon’s performance includes:\n\nJoseph Haydn\, Quartet in C Major\, Hob. III:77\, Op. 76\, No.3 (“Emperor”)\nAmy Beach\, Quartet for Strings (in one movement)\, Op.89\nFelix Mendelssohn\, Quartet in E-flat Major\, Op. 44\, No.3

SUMMARY:Victorian Christmas at the Octagon House
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the holiday season in Victorian splendor at The Armour-Stiner Octagon House in Irvington\, New York. Join us for an opportunity to experience this lyrical\, eight-sided home surrounded by the sights of Christmas in 1872. The restored National Landmark will be filled with elaborate holiday décor featuring wreaths\, garlands\, and the sparkle of ornaments on a grand Christmas Tree inside the salon. \nCreated as a whimsical summer retreat in 1872 by tea-importer Joseph Stiner\, this National Historic Landmark’s shape was based on the theories of Orson Squire Fowler\, a phrenologist\, who believed octagonal houses enclosed more space\, allowed the sun in at all times\, and permitted more views into the landscape. The Armour-Stiner Octagon House retains its magnificent ornamentation and furnishings and includes the only remaining Egyptian Revival Room in America with its original decoration and furniture.
