SUMMARY:Lyndhurst Tours
DESCRIPTION:Lyndhurst\, one of America’s finest Gothic Revival mansions\, overlooks the Hudson River in Tarrytown\, NY. The estate was shaped for more than a century by three families and their staff: The Pauldings\, The Merritts\, and the Goulds. Their influence is evident in the expansion of the main house from a country villa to a Gothic mansion\, the park-like design of the grounds\, and the rich furnishings and decorations inside. \nTours begin in April on Saturdays and Sundays\, expand to Thursday through Monday in May\, and Thursday through Tuesday in July. In late September\, the mansion transforms for the Halloween season with special collections and decorations out on display. The site closes in November as the mansion changes to the splendor of the Holiday season and re-opens the Friday after Thanksgiving for tours\, which run until the end of December. \n\nClassic Mansion Tour: Great for first-time visitors. Your visit covers the two main floors of the house.\nUpstairs/Downstairs Tour: Covers the main floors of the mansion with the addition of the backstairs and service spaces.\nInside/Outside Tour: Covers the main floors of the mansion\, then progresses through recently restored “outdoor rooms” in the rockeries\, rare trees\, gardens and outbuildings.\nLyndhurst Ramble Tour: In celebration of the Hudson River Valley Ramble\, a two- walking tour of the historic estate.\nDaily Grounds Pass: Enjoy the landscape; no tour\, no entry to mansion.\n\nLocation: Lyndhurst is a 67-acre estate\, with 15 individual buildings. All tour ticket holders should check in at the Carriage House Welcome Center\, where all tours begin. The Welcome Center is only open on days that tours are running. Parking is available on-site in designated areas. Please refer to their website for up-to-date information on events\, tour schedules\, closures\, and guidelines about visiting.

SUMMARY:Classic Daytime Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Soak up the beauty of this 174-year old cemetery while your guide regales you with stories of the fascinating people resting here in peace. \nThis two-hour daytime walk is the perfect way “to have a colloquy among the tombs” as Washington Irving\, famous author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”\, did himself back in 1849. \nYou’ll pay homage to the great author\, stop by some of the most interesting monuments in the old section before heading north to visit the final resting places of two-term Chicago Mayor Walter Gurnee\, steel titan Andrew Carnegie\, oilman William Rockefeller\, two people vital to the success of Wells Fargo and American Express\, and much more. Admire beautiful art\, architecture and cool cemetery symbolism along the way.  This tour gives a great overview of why Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is so famous. \nPlease note that the Classic Daytime Tour is the same route as the Classic Evening Lantern tour. The content is exactly the same – it just starts in a different location. \nDates: Every Saturday and Sunday 2:00 – 4:00 p.m in September. In October and November also 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon through Thanksgiving weekend.

SUMMARY:Local Lore and Legends
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Heidi Fuhrman. \nWhile Sleepy Hollow is well known for its headless horseman\, there are quite a few lesser-known legends that take place on this land. The names of some of our most iconic locations such as Spook Rock\, Ravens Rock\, Witch’s Spring come from stories that have been told by locals dating back hundreds of years. Join Rockefeller State Park Preserve for a 2-mile twilight hike to visit some of these locations and hear their stories. \nThe hike will begin at 25 Sleepy Hollow Road\, Sleepy Hollow\, NY 10591. Do NOT go to the main park entrance.

SUMMARY:The Octagon House: A Victorian Summer Home
DESCRIPTION:Experience this whimsical 1872 Summer home and its marvelously intact\, 19th-century landscape. You’ll hear tales of noteworthy owners and renters who have inhabited this eight-sided home\, including its current owner and his decades-long journey in restoring the house to its former Victorian grandeur. \nThe tour will include a brief history of specimen plants original to the property\, the carefully restored Lord and Burnham greenhouse\, the wonderfully romantic foxglove garden\, (shaped in the exact size and footprint of the house itself!)\, and the charming Octagonal birdhouse\, (a scaled-down replica of the house). Visitors will also experience the house’s wrap-around veranda that offers 360-degree views of the lush landscape\, as well as particular architectural details which relate specifically to original plants and foliage of the grounds. Finally\, the tour will continue inside the house with an interior tour of the first\, second and third floors\, which retain their magnificent ornamentation and furnishings. \n2023 Dates: “The Octagon House: A Victorian Summer Home” runs Thursday through Monday\, 10:00-11:00am\, July 7 – August 31.
