SUMMARY:An Ode to Francis Saltus Saltus
DESCRIPTION:Join Sleepy Hollow Cemetery for an evening in honor of illustrious poet\, linguist\, musician and scholar Francis Saltus Saltus\, a name so nice\, they gave it to him twice. \nFluent in 10 languages\, the ambidextrous Francis was said to be able to write sonnets with one hand while simultaneously composing opera with the other. He was quite a character\, to put it mildly. \nThe epitome of “live fast\, die young”\, Saltus penned classics like Flasks & Flagons\, an ode to 31 beverages including tea\, hot chocolate\, coffee\, water – and 27 kinds of alcohol. It’s no wonder he died at age 40 in 1889. \nEnjoy a reading of his delightful poems and quaff an adult beverage or two to get in the right spirit before visiting his grave. It will be the perfect way to pay our respects to the talented Mr. Saltus! \nAges 21+. Seated indoor event; runs rain or shine (grave visit weather permitting). \n\nAn Ode to Francis Saltus Saltus is just one stop on Sleepy Hollow Cemetery’s 2026 special-events calendar. This fall\, you can also catch dramatic readings of Dracula\, Frankenstein\, Jekyll & Hyde\, and The Time Machine; step into an interactive Murder Mystery inspired by Washington Irving’s most famous tale; sip Champagne Cocktails with the Dead among the cemetery’s grandest mausoleums; and paint your own Headless Horseman alongside artist Heather Gleason. See the full lineup and reserve your seats at sleepyhollowcemetery.org/special-events.
