SUMMARY:An Evening with The Kingston Trio
DESCRIPTION:Fans of legendary folk icons The Kingston Trio can re-discover their timeless music all over again. All three current members\, Mike Marvin\, Tim Gorelangton and Buddy Woodward have intrinsic links to and experience with the original group: Mike is the adopted son of founding member Nick Reynolds\, who was also his musical mentor; Tim\, a close friend since boyhood\, is one of the few musicians outside the Trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds; and Buddy\, who has performed with longtime Kingston Trio member George Grove. Many of their personal memories recall the iconic trio’s performances and journey as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture – and the top of the music charts. They’ll perform such timeless classics “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” and “Tom Dooley”.

SUMMARY:Beth Orton with Special Guest Pneumatic Tubes
DESCRIPTION:Beth Orton has long been regarded as possessing one of the most unique and expressive voices in music – a voice that has grown evermore rich and wise over time. Her 1996 debut\, Trailer Park\, pioneered a synthesis of electronic and acoustic sounds\, while its 1999 follow-up\, Central Reservation\, garnered international success. Further albums like the Jim O’Rourke-produced Comfort of Strangers and 2016’s largely electronic Kidsticks deepened the breadth of her craft. \nAfter struggling with incorrectly diagnosed health issues for years\, Orton turned a major corner in 2014 when she was finally able to begin managing her condition with medication after the correct diagnosis. However\, she realized this newfound clarity could be as disempowering as the previously unanswered questions about her well-being\, because it waylaid her sense of self. Strange occurrences persisted\, which Orton was only able to process through long periods of making music at the piano. These experiences turned into the eight-track Weather Alive\, the first album she’s ever self-produced in her nearly 30-year career. \nMany musicians turn inward when the world around them seems chaotic and unreliable. Reframing one’s perception of self can often reveal new personal truths both uncomfortable and profound\, and for Beth Orton\, music re-emerged in the past several years as a tethering force even when her own life felt more tumultuous than ever. Indeed\, the foundations of the songs on Orton’s stunning new album\, Weather Alive\, are nothing more than her voice and a “cheap\, crappy” upright piano installed in a shed in her garden\, conjuring a deeply meditative atmosphere that remains long after the final note has evaporated. \n“I am known as a collaborator and I’m very good at it. I’m very open to it. Sometimes\, I’ve been obscured by it\,” says Orton\, who rose to prominence through ‘90s-era collaborations with William Orbit\, Red Snapper and The Chemical Brothers before striking out on her own with a series of acclaimed\, award-winning solo releases. “I think what’s happened with this record is that through being cornered by life\, I got to reveal myself to myself and to collaborate with myself\, actually.” \nDon’t miss this chance to see Beth Orton at Tarrytown Music Hall!

SUMMARY:Poetry of Kyle Dacuyan
DESCRIPTION:“Whatever outcome or future we find ourselves in\, whenever and wherever this reaches you\, we will need the defiance of poetry.” \n–Kyle Dacuyan \nPoet Kyle Dacuyan’s work encourages readers to question the forces of work\, profit\, borders\, ownership\, and hierarchy. His powerful voice asks what we can do when freed of the expectation to prove function and demonstrate work. \nDuring his residency at The Pocantico Center\, Dacuyan will present a work-in-process reading of Dad Rock\, an episodic monologue bringing together poetry\, movement\, video\, and original music composition. The work considers the interrelations of authority\, discipline\, and punishment; the construction of patriarchal archetypes in music and other popular culture; and the ways these connect with global patterns of imperial violence. A reception will follow. \nThis event is presented in partnership with The Shed and the RBF Culpeper Arts & Culture program.

SUMMARY:A Palo Seco Flamenco Company presents FIERAS
DESCRIPTION:“The artists in A Palo Seco go far beyond showcasing their great musical and dance talent—they offer the experience of being transported by something deep and powerful stirring inside.” —New York Theater Wire \nA Palo Seco is a New York-based flamenco company that strives to develop a unique voice\, employing its dancers’ expertise while taking into account the context in which they live. Its work exposes audiences to a new way of looking at flamenco\, combining traditional techniques with a modern\, metropolitan flare. \nThe company will perform a work-in-process showing of Fieras\, a production inspired by women who have survived and thrived after experiencing domestic violence. Fieraswas created with support from an ArtsWestchester “Voices for Change” grant\, which supported a collaboration between A Palo Seco artistic director Rebecca Tomas and Hope’s Door\, a domestic violence advocacy organization and shelter located in Westchester County. The poignant performance draws from Tomas’ interviews with Hope’s Door staff and survivors of domestic violence. \nThe performance will be followed by a conversation with Tomas and staff members of Hope’s Door\, as well as a reception with special access to the David Rockefeller Creative Arts Center gallery\, currently showing Portraits of Process.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Peter Yarrow & Noel Paul Stookey
DESCRIPTION:Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey carry on the tradition of the renowned folk music group Peter\, Paul and Mary–a union that lasted 50 years. Peter\, Paul and Mary arrived on the scene in Greenwich Village in the early 1960’s and at the time\, for the majority of America\, folk was viewed merely as a sidebar to pop music. \nThe nation was still recovering from the McCarthy era and the Cold War was heating up. Peter Yarrow\, Noel (Paul) Stookey and Mary Travers came together to reclaim folk’s potency as a social\, cultural and political force. The Trio lived their songs. They sang at the 1963 March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech\, they participated in the Selma to Montgomery March\, they sang at countless anti-Vietnam War rallies and they launched decades of musical activism. These individual and collective efforts addressed a wide range of issues from women’s rights\, to farm-worker rights to the environment\, education and issues of gun violence. No American folk group lasted longer or amassed a more loyal following than Peter\, Paul and Mary. During their legendary career\, the trio won five Grammy’s\, produced 13 top 40 hits of which six ascended into the top 10\, and earned eight gold and five platinum albums.
