SUMMARY:Old Crow Medicine Show
DESCRIPTION:“If this is any indication of what Old Crow Medicine Show still has in store so many recordings in its career\, we should count ourselves lucky.” – NPR Music \nOld Crow Medicine Show got their start busking on street corners in 1998\, from New York state and up through Canada\, winning audiences along the way with their boundless energy and spirit. They eventually found themselves in Boone\, North Carolina where they caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy. He invited the band to play at his festival\, MerleFest\, and the rest is history. It’s been over twenty years since these humble beginnings. The band has gone on to receive the honor of being inducted as members of the Grand Ole Opry and have won two Grammy Awards: “Best Folk Album” for Remedy (2014) and “Best Long Form Music Video” for Big Easy Express (2013). Additionally\, their classic single\, “Wagon Wheel”\, received the RIAA’s Double-Platinum certification in 2019 for selling over 2\,000\,000 copies while the band’s debut album O.C.M.S. has been certified Gold (500\,000 copies). The band’s latest release is ‘Jubilee’ (Aug 2023) released via ATO Records.

SUMMARY:Boney James: Slow Burn Tour
DESCRIPTION:For saxophonist and composer Boney James\, these words perfectly describe the music he has crafted for his new Concord Records album\, Slow Burn\, releasing on October 18\, 2024. \n“When I mentioned that phrase to people as a possible title\, they said\, ‘That also refers to your whole career in a way.’ James says with a laugh. “This is my 19th record and I feel like I’m just hitting my stride.”\nSlow Burn is a new high point in a remarkable career that now spans more than three decades and includes a long list of accolades; four GRAMMY nominations\, three NAACP Image Award nominations\, a Soul Train Award for Best Jazz Album and four RIAA Gold Record certifications. In 2009\, Billboard named James one of the Top 3 Contemporary Jazz Artists of the decade. In 2024 Boney became the first ever artist to score 20 number one singles on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart. \nSlow Burn follows two of the most successful albums of James’ career\, 2020’s Solid and 2022’s Detour which debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart. \nJames is\, of course\, thrilled that his music continues to reach new audiences more than thirty years after he released his debut album\, Trust\, in 1992. “It’s always been my goal to be one of those guys that would just keep doing it at a high level\,” he says\, “and to have that connection with the audience.” \nThat’s what it’s always been about for Boney James. Growing up in New Rochelle\, New York\, James played clarinet in his school band\, but two years later\, he says\, “The teacher needed a sax player. As soon as I switched\, playing it became my favorite thing to do.” \nBy the time he entered his teens\, James was already gigging with bands\, and he turned pro at 19. After years of paying his dues with artists like The Isley Brothers\, Teena Marie and many more\, Boney cut his first album on an independent label\, which led immediately to a major label deal and a string of increasingly successful recordings and nonstop touring. \nNow\, James says\, “I wake up each day and try to play a little better. To quote the cellist Pablo Casals ‘I think I’m making progress.’ I am really proud of my playing on this new record. And I absolutely love the songs and the sound I achieved.” \nSome might say it has a Slow Burn: a deliberate intensity.

SUMMARY:An Acoustic Evening with Matisyahu
DESCRIPTION:When Matisyahu first started touring to packed clubs more than eleven years ago\, it was prior to the release of Live at Stubbs\, the now Gold record\, and prior to that record’s single “King without a Crown” reaching #1 on the alternative rock radio charts. His performances were a raw expression of his spirituality at that time and were supported by musicians who played a foundation of roots reggae augmented by the energy of a rock trio. Fans latched on quickly for a variety of reasons\, but in August of 2005\, just months after the release of Live at Stubbs\, Matisyahu found himself on stage at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival with the de facto leader of improvisational rock-n-roll; Phish’s front man Trey Anastasio. Many early fans of Matisyahu remember that moment clearly not because of the songs he played in front of the 80\,000 person crowd\, but because of his seemingly unfettered confidence (or perhaps naiveté) in helping lead Trey and his band through an improvisational display of beat boxing and lyrical gymnastics during the two songs performed. It may have been unrefined\, but Matisyahu’s passion for full band improvisation was laid bare. \nFans within the improvisational-jam scene began flocking to Matisyahu’s shows shortly thereafter. “King without a Crown” climbed the charts and Matisyahu’s follow up record Youth was nominated for a Grammy\, but the blessings and curses of mainstream success each took root. While Matisyahu’s bands have always been comprised of serious multidimensional players who have artfully molded the foundations of roots reggae into many genres\, that early; if only a brief display of complete surrender to the music\, seemed in some way to take a back seat. Through his lyrics however\, Matisyahu developed a more personal\, artistic\, and sophisticated way to express the yearning for deep spiritual meaning\, and as his own beliefs opened up to find more variety and depth\, the desire for his performances to match the unpredictable flow of life developed as well.

SUMMARY:Railroad Earth
DESCRIPTION:For over two decades\, Railroad Earth has captivated audiences with gleefully unpredictable live shows and eloquent and elevated studio output. The group introduced its signature sound on 2001’s The Black Bear Sessions. \nBetween selling out hallowed venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison\, CO\, they’ve launched the longstanding annual Hangtown Music Festival in Placerville\, CA and Hillberry: The Harvest Moon Festival in Ozark\, AR—both running for a decade-plus. \nSought after by legends\, the John Denver Estate tapped them to put lyrics penned by the late John Denver to music on the 2019 vinyl EP\, Railroad Earth: The John Denver Letters. \nBeyond tallying tens of millions of streams\, the collective have earned widespread critical acclaim from David Fricke of Rolling Stone\, American Songwriter\, Glide Magazine\, and NPR who assured\, “Well-versed in rambling around\, as you might expect from a band named after a Jack Kerouac poem\, the New Jersey-built jam-grass engine Railroad Earth has let no moss grow under its rustic wheels.”

SUMMARY:Madeleine Peyroux Quartet w/ Special Guest Gail Anne Dorsey
DESCRIPTION:“Let us advance our mortal bodies up where hearts and minds will go. Let’s walk\, let’s roll.” So sings Madeleine Peyroux on the upbeat title track of her captivating ninth album\, Let’s Walk\, the acclaimed singer-songwriter’s most assured\, courageous work to date. Powered by the distinctive\, honeyed croon that delivered her from the Paris streets to concert halls\, these ten unabashedly personal songs\, all co-written by the versatile Peyroux\, deftly interweave jazz\, folk\, and chamber pop\, with themes ranging from the confessional to the political\, from whimsy to yearning. In every note\, Peyroux digs deep\, rendering this exquisite work with the disarming grace and gravitas of an artist in peak form. \nGail Ann Dorsey is a multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and recording artist with a unique and impressive career in mainstream and independent music spanning more than three decades. Most widely known as one of the music world’s most influential and highly-acclaimed bass guitar players\, One of the most notable GAD vocal pairings is her show-stopping duet with music legend David Bowie on the Queen/Bowie classic “Under Pressure”.

SUMMARY:Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway
DESCRIPTION:2x-Grammy Award–winning singer\, songwriter\, and musician Molly Tuttle and her band\, Golden Highway\, released their latest album\, City of Gold\, this past July on Nonesuch Records. The Grammy-nominated City of Gold follows Tuttle’s acclaimed 2022 record\, Crooked Tree\, which won Best Bluegrass Album at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards and led NPR Music to call her “a female flat picker extraordinaire with agility\, speed\, and elegance who distinctively brings American roots music into the spotlight\,” adding that the album “marries the improvisatory solos of traditional bluegrass with singer-songwriter sophistication.” \nProduced by Tuttle and Jerry Douglas and recorded at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studios\, City of Gold was inspired by Tuttle’s constant touring with Golden Highway these past few years\, during which they have grown together as musicians and performers\, cohering as a band. Reflecting on the project\, Tuttle shares\, “When I was a kid\, we took a field trip to Caloma\, CA\, to learn about the gold rush. I’ll never forget the dusty hills and the grizzled old miner who showed us the nugget around his neck. Just like gold fever\, music has always captivated me\, captured my heart\, and driven me to great lengths to explore its depths. On my new album I dug deep as a songwriter (with Ketch Secor) and co-producer (with Jerry Douglas) and surfaced with a record that celebrates the music of my heart\, my life\, the land where I grew up\, and the stories I heard along the way. I made this record with my band Golden Highway after playing more than 100 shows across the country last year. On the road and in the studio\, we are inspired by artists such as John Hartford\, Gillian Welch\, and Peter Rowan\, to name a few\, whose records are like family albums to us. Just like them\, on this album we chart some new territory along with some old familiar ground. The songs span from breakdowns to ballads\, fairytales and fiddle tunes\, from Yosemite up to the Gold Country and out beyond the mountains. That visit to Coloma\, site of California’s first gold strike\, is where I first heard about El Dorado\, the city of gold. Playing music can take you to a place that is just as precious.”
