SUMMARY:The Secret Sounds of Swan Lake
DESCRIPTION:We all know lakes are full of mysterious creatures\, but have you ever wondered about the sounds they make? \nJoin musician and philosopher\, David Rothenberg\, in this family-friendly event as he reveals the soundscape of Rockefeller State Park Preserve’s Swan Lake using special technology. You’ll hear photosynthesis in action\, bugs stridulating\, fish grunting\, turtles and salamanders milling about\, and many sounds still unknown to science. \nLet’s figure out what is making all the beautiful music out there\, then join in and make some of our own! We’ll provide a couple iPads equipped with an app called Samplr so you can produce your own live music using sounds from the lake. Acoustic instruments are also welcome; David\, our host\, will bring a clarinet. Bring your own and play along! \nMeet in the Visitor’s Center courtyard and wear sun protection.

SUMMARY:Treason of the Darkest Dye
DESCRIPTION:Hudson Valley’s master storyteller Jonathan Kruk presents his Revolutionary War story\, Treason of the Darkest Dye. This performance is suited to families with children 9 and older\, and adults of all ages. Event takes place in the 3rd floor meeting room of the library. \nA monument just a few yards north of Warner Library marks the spot where\, on September 23\, 1780\, three local militiamen captured British spy John André\, exposing American general Benedict Arnold’s treasonous plan to turn over the fortifications at West Point to the British. Since Arnold’s plan also involved handing over George Washington\, the three locals may have averted a very different ending to the American Revolution. In Washington Irving’s short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” this spot is haunted by the ghost of the ill-fated André (the spy was hanged at Tappan\, NY across the Hudson River) and is where the headless horseman begins trailing Ichabod. Other local landmarks are nearby.
