Women’s Work Art Tour – Lyndhurst

July 28, 2022 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

$16 – $30

Women’s Work exhibition at the Lyndhurst mansion in Tarrytown tracks the deep, pervasive, and continuing influence of the domestic craft tradition in the practice of contemporary women artists. The exhibition explores how this embrace of feminine domesticity as an expression of gender-specific artistic identity was a constant practice for the growing number of women artists who emerged in the 1970s, 80s, and after. Conversely, the exhibition will explore how the embrace of feminine handiwork traditions has allowed the work of contemporary women artists to be diminished.

Approximately fifty contemporary works, created after 1970 by American women artists, will be placed in conversation next to historic antecedents from the 18th and 19th century in the mansion, a domestic setting for which the historic works were originally designed. The objective of the exhibition is to establish the significance of this influence, whether specific or subtle, and to highlight the diversity of artists, whether by race, class, or geographic location, who were influenced. The exhibit includes work by contemporary artists like Cindy Sherman, Faith Ringgold, Louise Bourgeois, and Yoko Ono.

The exhibition is mounted jointly with Historic New England, which will be providing much of the historic materials to be exhibited alongside the contemporary works. The exhibition is currently scheduled to run from May 27th until September 26th, 2022.
