Where the Legend Lives
Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell are delighted to announce a limited run of shows together in the Northeast in October 2023. The two songwriters, both with successful solo careers, have been singing together for over 30 years. First meeting when Richard hired Lucy to sing harmony on his first album, they became life-long friends and mutual fans. In addition to singing harmonies on virtually all of each other’s solo albums, they’ve collaborated on two celebrated projects. In 1998 they teamed up with their friend Dar Williams to record Cry Cry Cry. In 2015 Lucy and Richard recorded an album of duets, Tomorrow You’re Going.
Lucy Kaplansky released seven critically acclaimed solo albums on Red House Records, two of which won the AFIM award for “Best Pop Album,” and her album “Ten Year Night” is Red House’s best selling album of all time. Scott Simon of NPR said of Lucy’s latest independent release Last Days of Summer (2022) “utterly beautiful and affecting … Lucy sings songs from her life with resonance in ours.” Lucy’s version of Roxy Music’s “More than This” has over 12 million streams on Spotify, and she has appeared on the CBS Morning Show, NPR’s Weekend and Morning Editions and All Things Considered, Mountain Stage, and West Coast Live. Her voice has remained in high demand by her peers, and she can be heard on releases by Shawn Colvin, Bryan Ferry and Nanci Griffith.
Richard Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures, tell stories, juxtapose disparate images, and inhabit characters, vividly evoking little worlds and expanding our sense of what it is a song may be. From his first record, Sparrow’s Point (1992) through his latest release Careless (2016), he’s been exploring the possibilities offered by the genre, bringing his own unmistakable slant to the craft of songwriting. Along the way, his third release, Reunion Hill (1998) won the AFIM award for “Best Contemporary Folk Album”. Its title track, along with two other of his songs, were covered by Joan Baez on her 1997 release, Gone From Danger. Now living in Argentina, Richard has mostly stopped touring, making this a rare opportunity to hear his songs in person.
